Every RV owner has a different idea of what makes a place RV-friendly. Some prefer access to culture, history and great restaurants, while others long for outdoor adventures. Fortunately, our country’s abundance of campgrounds offers something for everyone. And everyone would likely be able to name one or more favorites.
RV Trader, an online classified site that buys and sells RVs, and has more than 160,000 new and used RVs for sale at any given time, recently set forth to target the nation’s greatest city for RV travelers. By relying on the intel gathered from the millions of buyers who search RV Trader, along with employees’ own personal experiences, they’ve targeted the favorite spot for 2024, and the choice may be surprising.
“The No. 1 criterion for our No. 1 RV city is that it has to have something for everyone,” said the article with their findings, published in early September. In addition, they considered affordability and driveability, and searched out a destination that was “quintessentially American.”
Their choice was Washington, D.C., a city that’s now officially nicknamed “RV City U.S.A.” by the folks at RV Trader. Thanks to its long list of free activities, including monuments, museums and national parks, it’s one of the most affordable big cities in the world.
It also has great entertainment–from great architecture and arts, to pro sports, concerts and access to nature. Plus, as RV Trader notes, “there’s definitely no place more American.”
For most RVers, there’s something for everyone in Washington, D.C. It’s fun to camp there and enjoy many free activities, with public transportation that allows visitors to keep their rig back at the campground. The one drawback according to RV Trader is that it’s a long trip from the West Coast. However, “every American should visit at least once in their life and it’s well worth the trek.”
RV Trader also included a few campground recommendations including Cherry Hill Park’s Capitol KOA or Greenbelt Park Campground, managed by the National Park Service as part of National Capital Parks East. Those traveling in smaller campers may even be able to find overnight parking in or close to the city.
